From My Heart
Dr. Curtis Hutson
on the Role of Fathers in the Home
While I was still pastoring a local church, we undertook a special celebration for Father’s Day. The month before we had celebrated Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day celebration was a grand success. But Father’s Day did not turn out quite as well. The enthusiasm experienced on Mother’s Day was missing, and it was difficult to find appropriate songs for the special occasion.
I think it is unfortunate that we sometimes fall short in our honor to fathers. God gives a very special place in the Bible to fathers. My beloved predecessor Dr. John R. Rice said that man, as God’s deputy, is head of the home. The father is a picture of God to the children. When we pray, we are taught to say, “Our Father, which art in Heaven.”
A father is God’s earthly picture of Himself. That is why fathers, especially, should be as God-like as is humanly possible. He is to be the teacher at home. The Scripture says in I Corinthians 14:34-35, “Let your women keep silence in the church: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home....”
The father is to lead in disciplining the children. Hebrews 12:9 says, “Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence....”
The father should lead in family worship. God expects men to lead in the home, the church, and the nation. Some unfortunate mothers have discovered the difficult task of trying to raise a Christian family without a Christian father.
May God give us a generation of strong Christian fathers who will lead the home according to Bible principles. And may He give us a generation of strong Christian homes.
The home is God’s oldest and greatest institution. As goes the home, so goes the church; and as goes the church, so goes the nation. But it all goes back to the Christian home. And God’s appointed head of the home is the husband and father.
