Lesson: Selected To Serve

Let me start our lesson this morning by asking you some questions…

- 1. Do you know how many Deacons are currently serving here at Church of the Open Door?

- 2. What are the names of those Deacons?

- 3. Who is currently serving as Chairman of the Deacons?

- 4. What are some of the Deacon’s responsibilities?

- 5. There is one life-time member of the Deacons. Do you know the name of that person?

These men are important servants who minister to the needs of those within our church so that our Pastor can be able to study, and pray, and preach the Word of God to the people in the church.

Jesus said in John 12:26, “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.”

Deacons are servants, ministering both unto God, as well as unto men, and God uses these men to show good and godly characteristics worth following after, if only we will take note of God’s plan for each one…

Let’s begin here in I Timothy 3:8-13 and see what God has to say about those men He has selected to serve as ‘deacons’

I : Deacons Duties

A: The Mind of a Servant
        - Matthew 20:27-28, Philippians 2:5-8

B: The Function of a Servant
        - John 13:3-5, Acts 6:1-7

II : Deacon Qualities

    A: Personal
        - Acts 6:1-7, I Timothy 3:8
          1: ‘Not doubletongued’
2: ‘Not given to much wine’
3: ‘Not greedy of filthy lucre’

    B: Spiritual
        - I Timothy 3:9

    C: Public
        - I Timothy 3:10, I Corinthians 4:2, Hebrews 11:6, I Timothy 3:6-7

    D: Family
        - I Timothy 3:11-12, Ephesians 5:22-27

III : Deacon Benefits
      - I Timothy 3:13, Proverbs 22:1

    A: A Personal Investment
        - Acts 6:3, I Timothy 3:13a

    B: A Rich Reward
        - I Timothy 3:13b, Acts 4:29-31

Conclusion:

God’s promise to those men who will commit themselves unto the Lord and who are selected by God to serve within the church body as deacons, will indeed “…well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.”, so that they will be in good standing, both with those inside and outside the church body itself, but most importantly, with God Himself!

Let me encourage you men whom God has chosen from this class to serve as deacons within the Church of the Open Door, to stand true to your calling so that one day, when you stand before the Lord, you will reap a great reward and blessing from the Lord!

And as far as our class in general goes, may we be found faithful to pray for our church’s leaders, our pastor, our pastoral staff, and especially our church council members—the deacons of our church, that we may serve the Lord with gladness of heart and with faithfulness that will bring honour and glory to God, both now and for all eternity!
