From My Heart
In Matthew 7:1-6, the Lord Jesus was delivering the Sermon on the Mount to the multitude of people who gathered along the shores of the Sea of Galilee. This sermon has many wonderful little gems of truth which stir the heart and teach us some tremendous principles for living the Christian life.
There is a great principle found in these six verses! The Lord Jesus is dealing with a subject that has caused a lot of people problems along the road of life. He said, “Judge not, that ye be not judged.” This first verse is not saying we are not to make judgments! We make judgments every day of our lives, but it is telling us we are not to judge others!
In v. 6, the Lord said we are not to give that which is holy to the dogs, and we are not to cast our pearls before the hogs (swine). The point is, if we are not to do these two things, we will have to make judgments to determine what is holy and what is a dog, and what are our pearls and what is swine. But we are not to judge others. We are free to make proper judgments as we go through life, but we are not free to judge.
To make His point, the Lord Jesus illustrates this for us with a simple little visual. In v. 3-4, the Lord said this about the way we are so quick to judge, “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” To see the impact of this illustration, we need to visualize the matter.
A “mote” is a little “speck.” If someone has a speck in their eye, it is not glaring! It does not stand out and does not demand attention. In other words, if one person notices a speck in someone’s eye, it is because that person is looking for it. Remember, a “speck” is a little tiny thing and is not glaring! So, how can a person see a “speck” in someone else’s eye? The point is you must be looking for it! A speck is not going to be seen unless someone is looking for it.
The Lord Jesus said, “Why would you dare to say, here, let me pull that speck out of your eye when you have a ‘2 by 4’ hanging out of your own eye?” He said, “You are going to knock the man’s head off with the ‘2 by 4’ hanging out of your own eye.” Now…that is funny if you can get a mental picture of it in your mind’s eye! He then added, “…first cast the beam out of thine own eye.” If we were as concerned about the “2 by 4” in our own eye as we are at the “speck” in our brother’s eye, we would be so much better off in life.
But, for some reason (called the sin nature) many Christians spend much of their time as “speck hunters.” Many folks spend every waking moment looking for things to pick about. We would all be so much happier and better off if we would stop the “speck hunting.” Have a great day!
