From My Heart
Next Sunday, November 7, is when we return to Standard time, so remember to set your clocks back one hour. As a child I always loved that extra hour of sleep, but when the evening rolled around, it got dark so early, it impacted whatever kind of ballgame we had going! I personally would like to see them leave it on Daylight Savings Time year-round! But, no one has ever called to ask my opinion or preference, so I figure nothing will change!
The third Gospel in the New Testament is the Gospel of Luke. Luke was a physician, a doctor, and accompanied the Apostle Paul on his missionary travels, which was a good thing because of Paul’s frail physical condition. But Dr. Luke’s observations are quite unique throughout the lengthy Gospel he penned. If you remember, the first three Gospels are called the Synoptics, meaning “similar.” They each tell basically the same events in our Lord’s life and ministry, adding their unique touch and emphasizing a different aspect of our Lord’s ministry.
Matthew tells our Lord’s story, emphasizing Christ as the King of Kings. Mark tells his story of the life of Christ, presenting Jesus as the Servant. Luke presents the Lord Jesus to us from Jesus being the Son of Man. And John present Jesus as the Son of God, as Deity - that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh.
But Luke being a doctor, gives us a unique take on things the others did not give! Being a doctor gave Luke an ability to pay attention to things the others did not seem to notice. In chapter 6, verse 6, Luke tells us about the man who had a withered hand. The Lord Jesus entered the synagogue to teach, and a fellow came into the synagogue who had a withered hand. Matthew and Mark tell the same story, but Dr. Luke is the only one who specifically told us it was the fellow’s right hand that was withered. As a physician Luke saw things the others did not see.
In chapter 5 and verse 12, Luke tells us about the fellow who was “full of leprosy.” The others just said the man had leprosy, but Dr. Luke saw the man was “full” of leprosy. It was not just a small spot or just on one hand…the fellow was “full of leprosy,” adding strength to the point that Jesus healed him in an instant. In chapter 4:38, Luke tells us how the Lord Jesus went into the home of Simon Peter, and his wife’s mother was suffering from a fever. But Luke said she had a “great fever.” It was not just a fever, but a “great fever.”
The Bible is an amazing Book! It is amazing because it is God’s Book, written by men, but those men were led by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of God. Each man God used has his personality and characteristics clearly seen - but they were led of God in the writing of their Books that are included in our Bibles.
Have a great day!
